Casimir Pulaski Day
Sufjan Stevens/Illinoise

soundboard:

Sufjan Stevens - Casimir Pulaski Day

After we’d visited Chicago for the first time (and fell in love with it) our Friday man introduced me to Sufjan Stevens and his album, Illinoise, a concept album where the lyrics tell various stories surrounding the places, people, events and history of the state of Illinois. I feel like I don’t listen to this album, but rather, experience it. The lyrics to each song (all twenty-one of them) feel like a slice of history and overall the album is just rich; I can (and often do) indulge in Illinoise for hours on repeat, trying to pick up lines and details that I missed before. Not only do the lyrics completely transport me, the musicianship is breath-taking; each track has its own delicate melody and hooks that spin about my head for days. I would love to find out all about the stories behind the songs.

All the songs have grown on me more and more as I’ve listened to the album over and over and this one, Casimir Pulaski Day, has remained one of my favourites from the beginning. The words.

If you haven’t listened to this masterpiece album yet, then I envy that you’re about to experience it too.

What a hip man…

Whether you call him the G.O.A.T., Biggie, Big Poppa, the Black Frank White, the Rap Alfred Hitchcock, today we celebrate Christopher Wallace’s life, not his death. Though he’s been gone for 15 years, he still remains a major influence upon hip-hop.
To Biggie!

My vote’s for Knope!
